Update on Portfolio.
Its been some time I'vent shoot a test or anything in that manner, that was because I've been busy moving my home, applying for business visa, searching for a photography studio and etc.
Well finally my friend Olgac Bozalp pressured me to get my ass up and shoot some tests, and I ended shooting 4 Photo-shoot in one week, one right after each other.

Light Setup #2
Here Comes the 2nd setup, I am aiming to put more in near future, and after I've published enough setups, I'd start posting once or twice a month, but for the time being I will upload more frequently.
Notes:
The beauty dish is the key-light and the umbrella is the fill.
Beauty dish is 16" and has grids attached to it.
The umbrella is one stop less than the beauty dish, and the soft-boxes are one stop greater than the beauty dish.

Light Setup #1
Here is the very first Lights.
I hope to post more over time, and post it with the better end result than myself so please do forgive me for my ugliness.
I hope that this will become a usual thing, and I will try to post 1 or 2 every month.
The backdrop is mint blue, Since blue has RGB values I picked it other than White or grey, and also the colour does look good even without the Gels, so it can act as a change in production if you one needs to make changes or need different looks in the editorial.
The background is 1 stop less than the key light.
There is also a additional small soft box under the Large beausty dish so the exposure on the model is the same head to toe. However the mid-length photos does not need such thing.

Time For a Change
So ladies and gentlemen, I firstly would like to apologise because I have not been updating my blog for a while however I'd like to point out that I only publish posts in this blog when ever I have time to sit down to write, research, or have material that I am allowed to publish, for example there are some shoot me like terry photos that I cannot touch until certain date.
That being said aside, The change in the blog will occur in lighting setups from my sketchbook page, which I have not updated for long time, I'll be taking that page down and now will start posting digitally drawn sketches with the end-result attached to the post, and I'll open new labels that will be named LightSetups.
PS. 2 new Photo shoots are coming to my website and blog soon.

Shoot me like "Terry" - 10.1
After a long and very quiet shoot of Lips (Beauty) I did the Expected thing . . . shoot the model like Terry :)
Lovely Laissa was more than happy to get off the chair in font of the beauty dish and the Mamiya, and snap some dynamic and vibrant photos in front of my "Terry Wall"

D800 Vs Linhof - 35mm Digital Vs 5x4 LargeFormat Film
Well this is funny, comparing film to digital in this year is a huge paradox that one can argue and even write a dissertation or thesis.
So here it comes to this Nikon D800 Vs 5x4 LargeFormat.
Ok before I start, let me tell you that the images are Photoshoped and yes I've added some noise in D800 (will tell you why soon).
So Nikon D800 is a 36Mp beast of DSLR camera and if used properly it will give amazing images. However, all that pixels do come with a drawback, which in this case exposure of the images shot in studio has to be spot on. I've noticed this only on grey backdrop, when I lit only a part of the backdrop I or lit it poorly(rare) so In D800 I see some posterisation forming on grey backdrops when the backdrop is 2 - 3 stops of darker areas, however I don't notice it at one stop darker or 4 stops darker areas. Strange. . .
Another drawback of D800 was its resolution and very high image quality, I wouldn't say it is a weakness, but I shoot fashion/beauty so sometimes I see so much detail I don't want to see which takes more time postproduction.
So I add a bit of monochrome noise in post production to eliminate the threshold and make the skin bith more smooth with out making it look like plastic or Simpsons colour.
LargeFormat Linhof is something else compared to D800 or any 35mmDSLR. However 5x4 film compared to D800 is different. Film that size collects huge amount of information and I can see a lot more details than 36mp image coming from tiny little 35mm sensor.
It is obviously noticeable that film has more details from shadows and blacks than the d800. Also its obvious that I used the tilt and shift function of the camera.
The drawback of the film in largeformat is that large format cameras needs more light to get the right depth of field, f/5.6 might be somewhere near middle in 35mm but in large format its is very shallow f/16 should be something more in middle for the largeformat, thus I used Portra 400 film, which arguably have more grain than Portra 160 which In use in medium format.
I do like the grain from film.
Film does slow down the workflow so I only use it when I can take my time during the production and postproduction of the shoot.
Here is a screen recording of me opening these two images on photoshop. There is no voice over or any recorded sound. Watch in highest resolution.

Here is the a behind the scenes of a shoot I did with Louise Hall. This shoot was a LipIllustrated shoot, I'll post once it's published.

Scanning negatives as positive.
Yep the title says it all, scanning negatives as positive then inverting them in photoshop.
So When I was shooting a part of my FMP, I used large format camera which was so fun to use, and also time consuming. But for such photos I could not just scan them and treat them as I treat 35mm negatives.
So to get the most out of the negative (most in data/information) i scanned them as positive and invert the image in photoshop and Correct the RGB in Levels layer.
This allowed me to use every bits of information that was on the negative.
More accurate colour and skin tones and more information in Blacks and Highlights on the negative.
Here is a Silent video of how it is done. (in order to understand what is happening in video some knowledge in Photoshop is required)
This is a great way of working on negatives, even in black and white film if you have time for that.
So if you can capture an entire Photo shoot with 12 sheets of film I'd recommend you trying this.

FMP - Multiple Personality Disorder
Here we go again.
This was my final Project for London College of Fashion.
When it was over I was happy and sad that I was no longer a student, now the work got more serious because there is no more room for error.
Since this was my last university project, I wanted to say goodbye to all the amazing equipment and resources that the university provided, thus I shoot this project on 5x4 Sheet film (Large format).
I used a Linhof monorail camera with Kodak Portra 400. Processed the Film by my self in dip and dunk tanks and scanned it by my self again in Hasselblad Flextight X1 all provided in good old LCF.
The multiple personality character Pam(the model) was having was inspired by the movie whatever happened to baby Jane.

I also shot on Mamiya and D800, when I have the time to Scan/Retouch them I will make a post about all 3 formats, and compare them, well obviously we know who is the winner. Why else would I choose the large-format files.

The Young Turks
After I helped my Friend and colleague Olagc with his shoot for Elle, featuring Erdem. The photography team and Erdem developed friendship bond over the shoot, while we were shooting we were having conversations about the Turkish language, Seafood and Baklava (Of corse). At the end we snapped a photo of all photography team with Erdem for memory of the day.

Young and Vibrant (Behind the Camera)
Lately I realised that I havent post any behind the camera material in the blog.
Its time to fix that.
As I mentioned the shoot went well. It was good timed and well planned shoot, no stress at all.
Hollie fine-tuning the makeup. I don't know why she isn't using the gigantic makeup table in the Studyo, my best guess is, perhaps it is because it is a little tuning of the makeup. Tereza is all patient, if I was a model I'd be laughing during the makeup time also I wonder if those brushes will tickle me.
Anna-Karin is all happy eye closed and soooo photogenic watching the shoot.

Terry 2.0
Little Change is coming to Terry section of the blog.
Recently, I was given a nice new tool to help me edit the photographs and manipulate the colours easier than the tools I used in photoshop. So I will experiment with the old terry photos and see how I can change the photographs.
I liked this new little program and no I'll not share it much, so my secrets will remen my secret.

Fashion Photography - Young & Vibrant
Here is one of the Photograph I liked from the young and vibrant shoot.
I think We did this well.
The entire team and I are impressed with the models performance, and everyone was happy with the outcome.
Especially I am very happy with this photo because I like the navy blue. "There's only one secret item that can uplift man's charisma and dominate the whole outfit : it's defiantly a navy shirt. [...] Navy shirts according to me, should be matched with white or bright colour items so that you can carry off the flash impact" (Yasin S. T.) However in this case and in this photo shoot a women is wearing it, the impact is quite similar, not fully similar but again quite similar.

Fashion Blogging . . . Escapism, Peacocking
When we set out to make this short, our intention simply was to observe the phenomenon of fashion bloggers and street style stars. As we started to review the footage, two salient trends became apparent: fashion editors frustrated by the ensuing commotion outside of shows, and the rise of "peacocking" street style stars as a result of the proliferation of blogs. This film examines these themes from both perspectives.

MōVI BTS
Mind blowing.
After I've watched this I was amazed.
Also if you watch carefully you can spot a GoPro camera mounted on top of the Camera/Transformer looking machine in the video. I guess there is a little GoPro in every production.
Hasselbald H5D
Even though I'd choose PhaseOne over Hasse they made a tasty looking camera.
More about the Campaign video, this is a awesome way of demonstrating the the camera. Usually they make the camera and shoot a Campaign video where they show retouched images on screen or in the video but in here they are demonstrating minimal amount of postproduction.
So if you have a Hasse, you can shoot a landscape or interior and have a huge print of it, then use the print as a backdrop in another photo. :) Clever . . .

Young & Vibrant
Here is lovely Tereza right after we finished the Young and Vibrant shoot, it was fun and relaxed shoot we even finished 30min before scheduled time.
As usual, right after the shoot I put my "Terry Flash" and asked her to pose for me in a way she feels like. No art-direction is required when you ask energetic person like her to be herself infront of the camera.
Stay tuned I'll post some of the photos from the shoot soon.

The reason Why I don't use & Recommend Flickr.
This Video shows, a photographer finding her work copied from internet and as a print in T-shirt. However this is just one photographer finding out that her work is used commercially without her permission. The number of photos copied of the internet without the photographers permission is remarkably high but the number of photographers finding their work being copied and ised without their permissions is incredibly low.
Of course the Flickr didn't have anything to do with this photograph being used without the permission of the photographer, however it acts as a vast cyber space where browsing and downloading high resolution photographs are made easy.

Mamiya Vs Nikon
Mamiya RZ67 ProII vs Nikon D3X
Almost a month ago I did a shoot with Laura Kate Rzemieniecka where I could take enough time to use two different formats of camera and media.
If you ask me, I like negative film and I love shooting with my Mamiya.
However the digital era we are living in now requires fast workflow not to mention some clients would like to see 20 options of each outfit or look to choose from, so digital photography is somehow inevitable, but that doesn't mean the film is dead.
Call me old fashioned but if someone was covering all my expenses and the clients had the patience to wait for processing and scanning I'd use film for everything except the LookBooks.

Beauty Shoot
This time we did it and we did it good.
Here is a sneak-peek of the photoshoot I did with my reliable makeup artist friend Laura Kate Rzemieniecka. This was a portfolio shoot and we all enjoyed the shoot, thanks to Laura and two bottels of vine she brought with her. Eren and Laura did a great job here and I think this trio will do more shoots together in future.
Also this was one of the first shoot I did in my studio.
Exposure: 1/125 sec at f/16 ISO 160
Camera: Nikon D3X with Nikkor 24-70mm
Photographer: Bugra Ergil (Bruce) MEMakeup: Laura Kate Rzemieniecka

Why did I keep the ISO 160 but not 100 ? Simple I was also shooting with the Beast Mamiya RZ67 ProII and I had Kodak Portra 160ASA loaded in it so 1st I wanted to compare Mamiya to Nikon 2nd I was lazy to recalculate exposure 2 times every photograph or every change.
So my Mamiya RZ67 proII VS Nikon D3X photos will be coming very soon, stay tuned!

Practicing Photoshop #3
Photoshop is one of the most important program/tool in fashion photography.
Even that the model, clothes, location, light etc . . . is perfect we still do photoshop, and since I started to work with people who are looking for unnatural results (by unnatural I mean, different colour than the actual image) I started experimenting in photoshop.
Here is one of the photographs I worked on, in photoshop. I hope its better than the last one . . . This has taken me two hours or so.
I know my colour manipulation skills are incredibly bad, but as my father once told me "practice makes perfect" and I hope to reach there soon. . .

Magnificent News . . .
If you are a usual (I doubt you are) reader of this blog, then you may have noticed that I haven't been writing here as often as I used to write. The reason for that was, my colleague and I were working on something which was very time consuming. However it is done we finally finished it.
It gives me great pleasure to announce that my Photography studio is completed, and it is awesome.
We decided to stick with the name "Studyo" which means studio in Turkish.
