Press Pause Play

Recently I've written a essay about Fashion Journalism "In what ways internet changed fashion journalism" and some how in my research I come up to a documentary film that interested me a lot.
The Documentary Films title was Press Pause Play showing how the internet, technology changed the industry.

I would recommend this film to any one who is interested in videography, photography, music, art, digital world, and media.

By the way this film is literally every where on web, free download, watch at YouTube . . . etc

Is this how THE SARTORIALIST works ?

I like Scott's style of photography, by saying that I mean I like the result of his photography. But I didn't know he was shooting like this. I always imagined he was shooting in more natural ways.

Update: 22nd April 2012

Interesting, looks like some one didn't like to share how Scott was actually working, or some one didn't want others to share.

Medium format night out

All right, so last year Erhan and I booked a Mamiya RZ67 PROII with 120 film back for a photoshoot. We got all the 120 color films but we ended up using the Leaf Aptus 65 digital back. After the shoot we had our usual snack go back home smoke sisha drink beer, finish the retouching. Then we realized that we didnt use any of the color film we bought for the shoot. So we decided to take the Mamiya out in London and somehow we ended up in embankment at 4 am.

Today 20.10.2011 I find these negatives while I was looking through my negatives box and decided to scan them.

Here are the results

Throwable Panoramic Ball Camera

Looks interesting and fun. My sister would love this.
Also this can be useful to me for recording or documenting behind the camera at location shoots, or any photographer who wanna have an interesting view of concert, fashion show, behind the fashion show, or any crowded event.

Heaven to Hell - David LaChapelle

Heaven to hell is one of the books that a fashion photographer should have in his / her library or bookcase. The book does not contain any technical aspects of fashion photography. Its a book to look at it and to be inspired.

UnderWater Photography - COLORS

As you may know during the summer I had LOTS of Free Time and put that free time in to good use and become a diver. It wasn't easy as easy as I imagined . . . Well theory and practice part was easy but my teachers were from military so they were strict & hard. When I took the under water photography course I learned that colors lose contrast or completely change or disappear under water.

The picture above shows in which depth colors change or disappear. (the writing is in Turkish but still you can understand)

Between 3 - 4.5  meters and below RED
In 9 meters and below ORANGE
In 18 meters and below YELLOW
Between 27 - 46 meters and below GREEN
In 46 meter BLUE
Under 46 meter DARK BLUE and PURPLE

The colors that are lost can be seen in light. So if the diver has under water light or under water flashgun for the camera then he can capture the true colors by lighting them.

Another year

Holidays are over and now I'm back home in London.
I don't know if I should be happy or sad, because I was having fun time In Turkey Doing nothing and now I'm in London which means no more laziness.

I already started preparing for my course by cleaning my cameras, lenses, buying lots of 35mm film.

Why film?
Film photography was and is the original way of photography but that doesn't make digital photography fake, digital just made everything EASIER. How ever After I watched (Annie Leibovitz: Life through a lens) I saw that in her photoshoots she uses Digital and Film both in 35mm and medium format. That inspired me on doing the same, getting each outfit with digital and then film. This way I document my shoots in digital and solid way.

By the way that's how my fridge looks like today. I was thinking of buying a mini fridge just for the Films but I think there are better things that I spend my money on these days.

I will be using Kodak Ektar 100 ISO film in all my fashion shoots, and any other 35mm film for my personal use or test shoots.

LCC Exhibition

I went to Round About Upside Down exhibition at LCC (London College of Communication) and I came across something interesting. Most of the photographers had their business cards near their photographs and on some of the cards they have a sample of their photographs.

Nikon D700 vs Nikon F5 analogue

Digital VS Film

I wanna point out 1 thing which wasn't a part of the video.
D700 is 12mp digital camera and look at the size of the print, this goes to people who thinks more megapixels means bigger prints.

Film Photography & Developing color film(C-41).

After reading the Book UNSEEN VOGUE, I got inspired by the old time fashion photographers. Before the digital photography, photographers used 35mm film and 120 films on fashion photography and I told my self how can I call my self photographer if I don't know how to Develop color films. So I decided to learn developing color films. I borrowed Nikon FM2 with 50mm 1.2 lens from my school and take photos in the weekend. So far I developed  9 rolls of 35mm color film and will develop 4 more by next Monday.

Developing color films is not as hard as it sounds.
In my schools darkroom all the chemicals are ready in the tanks and set with the temperatures.
The chemical tanks are big enough that I can develop 12 of 35mm films or 9 of 120 (medium format) films in one go.

1st chemical is Develop: Agitate for first min then stop for 30 sec than agitate for 30 sec do this for 3min and 15 sec.

2nd chemical is Bleach: Before you start anything oxygenate the bleach for 5 to 10 min (this applies if the bleach is already in a special tank for developing and has been there for a while) this is the first thing you should do when you enter the darkroom while the lights are actually on in the dark room. Agitate for the first minute than wait for 30 sec than agitate again for 30 sec, do this for 3min and 30 sec.

3rd chemical is  1st Wash  which is just water (H2O): Wash doesn't have to be in 100°f , and if you are in dark room after the bleach when you put the film tray in to first wash you can turn the lights on. 2min in first wash, there is no need to agitate but you can fiddle.

4th chemical is Fix: Agitate for the first min than stop for 30 sec, agitate for 30 sec and do this for 3min 30 sec .

5th chemical is 2nd wash which is just water(H2O): just like the first wash it doesn't have to be in 100°f. keep the film tray in for 2min there is no need to agitate but you can fiddle.

6th chemical is Stabliser: Keep the film tray in for 1min and 30 sec. There is no need to agitate but you can fiddle.

After the Stabiliser take the films to drying cabin hang them and put a clip weight on bottom so they stay straight.

A photo of me taken by my friend Shin Ru Lu in the darkroom.

All the chemicals in order, the 1st and 2nd chemical has a little mark that glows at dark so I can see where to begin in darkroom, those glow marks don't affect the negatives unless you literally put the negatives on them. (many people might think there is red safety light here but there is no red safety light, once the lights are out you are no different than a blind person)

From left to right, Develop, bleach, 1st wash, fix, 2nd wash, stabilizer.

This is the film loading area in the darkroom.
I will write more about the darkroom after October 2011.

Location permissions

Photographing in Location is not as easy as it looks. One can't just go and take photos in location with out permission or with out  informing the responsible person about the location. On location photography everything must be arranged and planned before, specially if the location is private property. Photographer might have to sign risk assessment papers in order to have the permission for the photo shoot.

Here are 2 examples of risk assesment papers I had to fill.
